Radiometric survey to study contamination of the soil with the radioactive pollutants

The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and Scientific-Research Center specialists conducted radioactive contamination of radiometric polluted soil on the territory adjacent to the former Institute of Tea and Subtropical Cultures in Ozurgeti, Anaseuli. This area was contaminated during the robbery of former Institute of Tea and Subtropical Crops in the 90s of the previous century.
The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency periodically checks the area. According to analyzed data, the ionizing radiation capacity is unchanged over the last few years and is not a threat to the local population. Specialists together with Guria Governor Merab Chanukvadze met with the local residents and informed them about the current situation. In October 2017, the agreement was signed with the Swedish Radiation Safety Center was noted by head of radioactive waste department of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency, Gia Nabakhtiani. Within the scope of the agreement, detailed and comprehensive examination of the above mentioned area is done and the project is already launched with the participation of Swedish experts.
Detailed radiological monitoring of the land area surface is planned and study of the distribution of radionuklides in the depths of the contaminated areas. Geological and hydrological studies will be conducted. After completion of the research, a detailed plan will be prepared including writing of problem solving methods. The decision to take specific steps will be defined upon the requirements " noted Giorgi Nabakhtiani.
