The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture hosted the first meeting of the project " Support to Environmental Protection and Fight against Climate Change in Georgia’’ Steering Committee

The Deputy Minister Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili delivered an opening speech at the meeting. In her remarks, the Deputy expressed her gratitude to the European Union for long-standing and effective cooperation and emphasized the importance of the new project.

Mrs. Tandilashvili pointed out, that the respective project will significantly contribute to the fulfillment of obligations taken under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and, will bring the country closer to the European Union.

According to Mr. Alexandre Darras, Sector Coordinator of Connectivity, Energy, Environment & Climate change, EU Representation, within the framework of the new project, Georgia will be able to improve the legislation in the environmental protection and climate change fields, which is particularly important in the rapprochement process with the European Union.

 

The overall objective of the project is to assist the Government of Georgia to deepen its integration with the European Union in line with the priorities set out in the Association Agreement and the Association Agenda.

 

The specific objectives of the project are to support the implementation of the environmental and climate provisions of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement with a focus on:
- Reducing air and water pollution, controlling industrial emissions, raising awareness in the environmental protection and climate change areas, supporting the aquaculture sector, and promoting sustainable forest management.

 

The two-year project with a budget of EURO 2.302.500 million will be implemented by the international consulting company NIRAS and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute in coordination with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
