Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili attended the Presentation of the National Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030 and the National Waste Management Action Plan 2022-2026

The Deputy Minister expressed his gratitude to the European Union, international donors, and partner organizations for their contribution to the development of the sector and attached great importance
to the respective National policy documents.

"As you know, our goal is to get closer to EU standards. Today’s event is yet another step forward in this direction. National Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030 and the National Waste Management Action Plan 2022-2026 are critical documents for the country, which will support us in achieving sustainable development goals and fulfilling obligations taken under the Paris Agreement. The respective policy documents aim to define waste management policy and goals at the national level. This achievement is the result of our joint efforts and dedicated work, and I would like to sincerely thank you for all your assistance", said Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili.

"The support, as well as the development of the waste management sector in the country, is crucial for us. I am delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the presentation of the National Action Plan on Waste Management today. I think that the new action plan will significantly contribute to the development of the sector", said Mr. Alexander Daras, Thematic Sector Coordinator, Connectivity, Energy , Environment and Climate Change, Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.

It should be mentioned, that the National Waste Management Strategy (2016-2030) and the Action Plan (2022-2026) represent a comprehensive, national policy framework document, which determines and sets the strategic directions for reducing and preventing waste generation across the country.

The National policy document was carefully planned and prepared by taking into consideration the best practices of EU countries, which include the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) approach and the "polluter pays" principle.

The primary goal of the National Action Plan is to develop and enforce waste management legislation and ensure its compliance with the EU requirements, implement an effective waste management system for waste collection and transportation, waste prevention, and recycling, and also improve the environmentally sound management of hazardous and plastic waste.

It should be mentioned, that the National Waste Management Action Plan was developed within the framework of the EU-funded project "EU for the Environment" (EU4Environment) with the support of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus), and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

The event was attended by the representatives of the Government of Georgia, Parliament, relevant state agencies, Ministries, diplomatic corps, international donor and partner organizations, and other stakeholders.
