Outstanding students receive "Green scholarships"

"It is crucial to support young people and encourage them to get proper environmental knowledge and education, and acquire important professions, such as geology, hydrology, and ecology. We are actively cooperating with the Ministry of Education, and higher education institutions and implementing joint projects, within which we motivate young people to get interested in the mentioned professions and, subsequently, serve their country", stated the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia at the"Green Scholarships" award ceremony event. 


32 environmental students from 8 universities of Georgia were awarded 1500 GEL scholarships. The "Green Scholarships" program, implemented by the Environmental Information and Education Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture will promote environmental professions regarded as deficit occupations, and encourage outstanding students. Within the framework of the program, students will have an opportunity to gain practical experience in relevant agencies of the Ministry.


According to the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Georgia Nick Beresford, given the current reality, the scientific direction in the environmental protection area is highly relevant, and such support from the Government is highly appreciated. 

 It is worth mentioning that the students of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Ilia State University, Technical University of Georgia, Georgian Institute of Public Affairs, Akaki Tsereteli State University, Iacob Gogebashvili Telavi State University, Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, and Sokhumi State University received ‘’Green Scholarships’’.


Scholarships are available for the following master’s programs: Physical Geography and Sustainable Development of Environment, Integrated Water Resources Management (Hydrology), Geology, Energy and Mineral Resource Management and Sustainable Development, Environmental Protection and Engineering ecology, structural (applied) geography and environmental protection, environmental management and policy.


 Mrs. Maia Bitadze, Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Deputy Ministers of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili and Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili,  Mrs. Nunu Mickevichi, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Mrs. Khatuna Zaldastanishvili, Program Officer of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Director of Environmental Information and Education Center Mrs. Tamar Aladashvili, representatives of universities attended the award ceremony event.

The Environmental Information and Education Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is implementing the "Green Scholarships" program within the framework of the large-scale initiative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) ‘’Reducing Risks of Climate-Driven Disasters in Georgia", and with the support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Governments of Georgia,  Switzerland, and Sweden.
