"The First Protected Multi-Purpose areas was established in Samukhi Valley, named after the famous Georgian scientist, biologist Nugzar Zazanashvili”

On November 16, 2022, the Parliament of Georgia approved the Law on the “Creation and Management of the Multi-Purpose Territory of Samukhi, named after Nugzar Zazanashvili. The Law will come into effect on January 1, 2023.

The creation of the first protected area is related to the renowned scientist Nugzar Zazanashvili and his outstanding contribution to expanding and developing the network of protected areas and protecting the environment in the country.

The Samukhi multi-purpose area covers 13,273 hectares in total.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria, the main goal of establishing the first VI category protected areas in Georgia is to restore, protect and maintain the reintroduced gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) population in Georgia.

The Samukhi Valley comprises the Emerald Network of Areas of particular conservation interest for the conservation of wild animal and plant species and natural habitats, rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.
Establishing a protected area in the mentioned place will contribute to biodiversity conservation at the local, national and transboundary levels, strengthening the network of protected areas in Georgia, protecting key species, developing sustainable ecotourism, and preserving the traditions of Tushetian shepherds.

In 2019, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, jointly with the Agency of Protected Areas, started working on creating the Samukh multi-purpose area with the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
