Otar Shamugia attends the discussion on the Draft Concept of National Policy for Sustainable Management of Pastures.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. Otar Shamugia attended the workshop held within the framework of the two-year project “Achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Targets of Georgia through Restoration and Sustainable Management of Degraded Pasturelands” funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). 

During the meeting, the participants discussed the Draft Concept of National Policy on the sustainable management of Georgia’s pastures.


"It is crucial to be able to utilize and safeguard land resources. The Parliament, representatives of relevant agencies, and foreign specialists actively participated in the development of the state policy document on sustainable management of pastures. The respective policy document will serve as the foundation of the appropriate legal framework, enabling us to proceed with the proper regulation of matters on the management of pastures in the country", - the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, stated.


The workshop covered the goal of the concept of the national policy of sustainable management of pastures, which implies establishing a unified, coherent approach to the sustainable use of pastures and protection of meadowlands, which will ensure the prevention of land degradation on pastures and the preservation of biodiversity, will contribute to the improvement of pasture fertility, sustainable development of the livestock sector and increased productivity. The mentioned policy document will be the basis for the preparation of the relevant legislative package in the field of pasture management.

 The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Regional Environmental Center of the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) implement the project at the national level. The project partner is the Caucasus Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations Network (CENN).


The national and international experts in coordination with the inter-agency working group established within the framework of the project “Achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Targets of Georgia through Restoration and Sustainable Management of Degraded Pasturelands” actively participated in the development of the state policy document on sustainable management of pastures.



The Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, Mrs. Maia Bitadze, and the Chair of the Agrarian Issues Committee, Mrs. Nino Tsilosani, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders attended the discussion of the draft concept of the national policy for sustainable management of pastures.
