Nino Tandilashvili presents a report at the joint sitting of the European Integration and Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committees.

At the joint sitting of the European Integration and Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committees, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, presented a report on the fulfillment of the Association Agreement and the EU Integration National Action Plan for 2022.

Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili introduced the thematic information on the steps taken by the Ministry, including improvement of air quality, achieved results, and existing challenges.

"The Government of Georgia has recently approved a project on industrial emissions to reduce the environmental pollution derived from the industrial sector. In 2022, the parliament started to discuss the draft law on the improvement of water resources management, which is scheduled to be adopted in spring 2023. The respective draft law fully responds to the relevant directives of the European Union and supports the fulfillment of the obligations set forth under the Association Agreement, and most importantly, the draft law ensures the sustainable management of water resources in our country.

 

We have made progress toward expanding protected areas and protecting biodiversity across the country. Almost 14% of the territories of Georgia unite protected areas. This year, we have expanded the protected areas by adding 110,000 ha, which is crucial for biodiversity protection and is a part of the agenda in the EU integration process. We have prepared the law on biodiversity, which will be submitted to the Parliament of Georgia next year," said Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili.

 

The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of improving waste management in the country and noted that Georgia has started an important reform, which provides Extended Producer Responsibility including the sorting of waste.

Mrs. Tandilashvili also underlined the importance of air protection legislation in the country and the improvement of air quality, which includes the reduction of industrial emissions and improvement of air quality in large cities. 


 "We have set new standards for enterprises, enterprises have started to deploy online monitoring systems, which will significantly contribute to the reduction of industrial emissions in the ambient air. We have new legislation to ensure the reduction of air pollution from the transport sector", said Mrs. Nino Tandilashvli.


According to the Deputy Minister, all the activities carried out by the Ministry and the draft laws are in full compliance with the obligations taken under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement.



The members of the committees and the representatives of the relevant agencies of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture attended the joint sitting.
