Otar Shamugia: " Several new protected areas with a total area of 120,000 hectares were established in Georgia in 2022’’

Mr. Otar Shamugia, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture spoke on the program "Business Partner" about the results achieved in the field of protected areas.

"This year, we took significant steps in the field of protected areas, creating several new protected areas with a total area covering about 120,000 hectares. Currently, protected areas cover approximately 13% of the entire territory of the country, and we are working to increase this figure "

‘'We are concentrating our efforts in the Guria and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regions. It is unquestionably critical to develop an appropriate ecotourism infrastructure in these territories. Tsalka Canyon opened this year and drew a large number of visitors. In the future, we will have new locations. We are working hard to build the necessary infrastructure and increase the number of visitors to our protected areas. I'd like to point out that so far, good results have been obtained in this direction.

This year, we have already had over 880,000 visitors, which is significantly more than the previous year. In this regard, I believe 2023 will be even more active. We will work very hard to create even more interesting objects in the country, using both budget funds and attracting private investments," Mr. Otar Shamugia stated.
