"Hazelnuts are a source of income for thousands of families and an important export product. More than 70 percent of exports go to the EU market. Last year, we launched a support program in which we gave targeted assistance of 21 million GEL to owners of hazelnut orchards covering more than 44,000 hectares. The state support program will be implemented in 2024 as well", said Mr. Otar Shamugia, the candidate for the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, at the joint session of the committees in the Parliament.
According to the candidate of the Minister, the bio-production promotion program will continue, including the stimulation and support for different business activities in the highland regions, for which the Ministry created a new program last year. 60 startup ideas have already been financed under the respective program.
At the joint session of the committees, Mr. Shamugia also spoke about the agro-insurance program, stating that the damages compensated under the program exceed GEL 80 million. The Ministry is actively working with insurance companies to make the program more tailored to the interests of farmers.
