The Earth Day has been marked since 1970. The idea for a national day to focus on the environment, came to the Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, which resulted oceans being polluted and water dwellers dyeing.  Nelson inspired 20 million Americans to defend the Earth. Earth Day is one of the largest environmental events throughout the world, with over 17,000 organizations and millions of volunteers from 175 countries around the world to participate.

The Earth Day was first celebrated in Georgia in 1990 and since then, it has joined many organizations and volunteers who carry out various types of environmental activities throughout the country.
