The Green Climate Fund approves $ 32 million grant to support the development of the forestry sector in Georgia

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili met with the delegation of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). At the meeting, the sides were focused on the strengthening cooperation between the Green Climate Fund and Georgia and discussed opportunities to improve an access to the Fund's financial resources.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture expressed his gratitude to the representatives of the Green Climate Fund for effective cooperation.

Levan Davitashvili underlined the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation in the country and drew his attention to the importance of the ongoing projects in the field of environmental protection. 

As was mentioned, the Green Climate Fund  plans to allocate $ 32 million grant to support the development of the forestry sector in Georgia. The arrangement of irrigation systems in the country was also brought forward at the meeting.

The representative of the Green Climate Fund, Clifford Polycard noted, that Georgia is one of the leading countries in the Eastern European region, with clearly defined priorities that are very important for strategic partnership. The Green Climate Fund supports Georgia to overcome the climate change related challenges and provides financial resources to deal with these challanges.

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) delegation pays an official visit to Georgia, which will last for a week.

The Green Climate Fund is an operating entity of the Financial Mechanism of the UN Convention on climate change , which is financing the projects related to the climate change mitigation and adaptation in the developing countries. The Fund is considered as one of the largest financial partner organizations for Georgia providing financial support in the fields of climate change mitigation and green economy development.

The First Deputy Minister Giorgi Khanishvili, Deputy Ministers Nino Tandilashvili, Khatia Tsilosani and the Heads of the relevant departments of the Ministry attended the meeting.
