18 new projects to implement in Georgia

18 new projects will be implemented in different regions of Georgia. The projects will be funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program, implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili outlined the importance of  the implementation of these projects. The Minister noted, above mentioned projects will make a significant contribution to Georgia's environmental and climate change activities.

“Today we awarded 18 winners. The best projects were selected.. Among the best projects were restoration / conservation of unique types of Georgian wheat species, soil fertility preservation, ecotourism projects, demonstration of energy efficient innovative technologies at Alpine pastures/ Borjomi Kharagauli national park etc. I believe, these initiatives and projects are very important and results will be interesting ” Levan Davitashvili said.
According to Louisa Winton, Head of the UNDP in Georgia noted, that local people as well as NGOs are engaged in the program. The program aims to tackle climate change and green economy related problems at the national level and to undertake environmental pollution control measures.

Projects include restoration of Colchian pheasant in Vashlovani Protected Areas, conservation of rare plants on the Colchian lowland, planting of urban yards in Tbilisi and more.
The total cost of the eighteen projects amounts US $ 1.1 million. Of these, funding from the GEF Small Grants Program and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reaches $ 500,000, and monetary and non-monetary co-financing raised by participating organizations is $ 600,000.
