Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili attends the EU Public Forum "Talking Climate"
The EU Public Forum "Talking Climate" focused on the increasing engagement of young people and society against climate change actions was held at the Caucasus University.
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili noted, that Georgia as a party to the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is gradually fulfilling obligations taken under the Convention.
“In 2015, we presented our commitments to achieve the reduction of emissions; We have a new plan proposing changes to be mplemented at the national level which will be approved by the end of the year. The updated plan is comprised of ambitious goals; Georgia must make a special contribution to mitigating climate change. Unfortunately, threats posed by the climate change are already a reality and we have witnessed a number of natural disasters. Georgian government has important plans in this direction, including preservation of biodiversity and sustainable forest management "Levan Davitashvili said.
The forum included a discussion, whereby, participants set focus on the issues, how to engage citizens, especially young people in the climate change mitigation actions.
The Head of Cooperation at EU Delegation to Georgia, Vincent Rey noted, that climate change has become one of the top issues in recent years.
"The climate action summit was held in New York, whereby, world leaders discussed how to make the life better for people living both in cities and rural areas. We can take an action to reduce emissions, try to use more energy efficient systems etc. The European Union makes the best efforts to support similar initiatives. The Embassies of the different EU countries are engaged in this process. We are working with international partners and donors"said Vinsent Rey.
At the forum, students shared their experiences and opinions on the climate change and presented presentations on our lifestyle impact on climate change and what activities might be done in this area to benefit the environment.
At the end of the event, a joint action - "Take an action to mitigate climate change and its consequences’’ was conducted, where all participants expressed willingness to take responsibility for climate change, to make real changes to their lifestyles to mitigate and combat the climate change and its impacts.
The President of the Caucasus University, Kakha Shengelia, Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi, Maia Bitadze, Tamar Aladashvili, Director of the Center for Environmental Information and Education Tamar Aladashvili attended the event.
