Levan Davitashvili held a meeting with the honey producers
At the session of the Beekeeping Advisory Board, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili made an opening speech, whereby he brought forward activities implemented by the Ministry to support the development of the honey sector.
“Honey production was increased by 35% in recent years. We have a great potential in producing honey bee products. However, we also face challenges in a number of fields including food safety, veterinary and we definitely need to increase knowledge in the aforementioned directions. We believe that, honey will become an important export product in the long run.
It is noteworthy, that significant progress has already been made. We actively participate in the international exhibitions and are allowed to export to different European markets. Moreover, we have an ambition to make an export boom in the future ”Levan Davitashvili said.
The Alliances Caucasus Programme ALCP Team Leader, Helen Bradbury noted, that similar meetings are very important to enhance communication between the public and private sectors.
The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Minister, Khatia Tsilosani, Head of the National Food Agency, Chairman of Agricultural Laboratory, Food Safety Department, Ombudsman's Office, members of beekeepers association board, private laboratories and honey producers attended the meeting which was organized by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the international NGO Mercy Corps and the Caucasus Alliance Program.
