The representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia opened the campaign ‘’Food Waste’’ initiated by the Ministry

The goal of the campaign is to provide black bears, which are included in the red list with food products and released them from captivity.
A number of large supermarkets have already joined the Food Waste campaign, including Carrefour, AgroHab and Spar. Many companies as well as people expressed a desire to help and take care of bears. The involvement of every citizen can significantly improve the living conditions of indigenous bears.

“In 2010, we set up a bear shelter in Tskhvarichamia to help the captive brown bears, furthermore, the shelter serves as a housing for up to 15 brown bears. The bears have lived in harsh conditions for many years and were kept in small cages, so they are not adapted to the natural environment and have to stay in the shelter for a long time for their own safety.

The costs for creating favorable conditions for bears are increasing, and the financial resources of the shelter are scarce. With the help of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and with the support of the private sector, additional resources have been mobilized for the rehabilitation of bears, ”said Soso Jikurishvili, founder of the shelter.
