Consultation on the implementation of extended producer responsibility

In December 2019, the extended producer responsibility defined under the Georgian Waste Management Code will come into a force, moreover, the aforementioned  policy approach will enforce producers and importers to take responsibility for management of the disposal of products they produce once those products are designated as harmful and no longer useful by consumers.

The Holiday Inn Hotel hosted a consultation meeting on the principle of extended producer responsibility, bringing together representatives of relevant departments of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, international, donor organizations, private sector, chambers of commerce, business associations and other stakeholders.

The participants discussed the draft project on the Electric waste and bylaws on Electronic Waste and drew their attention to the possibilities for assisting producers and importers of electrical /electronic products in the process of introduction of extended producer responsibility.

The experience of European countries, which already implemented the extended producer responsibility policy, the challenges and opportunities faced by the manufacturers were brought forward at the meeting.

The project is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Environmental protection and Agriculture of Georgia, with the financial support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Swedish Government, in cooperation with the Georgia's Environmental Outlook - GEO.
