Khatia Tsilosani Attended the Presentation of the EU -Funded project “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia”

The National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia hosted the presentation of the EU-funded project  “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia”, The Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Khatia Tsilosani attended the event.

The support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and the Government of Georgia in all areas that will contribute to the development of the country's economy and improve the economic situation of rural population is of utmost importance. I think, that creation of an efficient protection and control system of geographical indications in the country will allow us to maximize the potential of Georgian agricultural products. Implementation of the system will contribute to the country's cultural identity, popularization and export of Georgian products and consequently increase incomes of population ”said Khatia Tsilosani, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

As the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Carl Hartsel noted, the introduction of a protection and control system of geographical indications and appellations of origin is important for economic development of the country and for promotion Georgian traditional, unique production.

The project with the budget of 1.5 million Euro aims to support the development of “Appellations of Origin (AOs)” and “Geographical Indications (GIs)” systems in Georgia through the creation of effective supporting tools with the provisions of the European Union’s GIs protection system.  The beneficiary of the project is National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia. 

The project will last until January 2021 and will be implemented by national authorities of Member States (Italy and France).

The Ambassador of Italy Mr. Enrico Bartoli, a representative of French Embassy Ms. Ioulia Sauthier, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, public and private organizations, project leaders and foreign experts attended the event.
