Current Situation in the hazelnut sector and future plans discussed at the Hazelnut Growers Association

 

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Khatia Tsilosani attended the meeting, which was organized by Hazelnut Growers Association.

 “As we are all aware, hazelnut is one of the main export products in Georgia; Therefore, promoting development of the hazelnut sector is particularly important for the state. I would like to outline the role of sectoral associations and the importance of their contribution to the economic development of the country. Hereby, we should note, that successful outcome was achieved through  joint efforts of the Hazelnut Growers Association and Georgian government in the fight against the most important challenge faced by the hazelnut sector  in recent years- the Asian stink bug. Furthermore, I would also like to express my gratitude to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its partner international organization Ferrero for their contribution to the development of the sector” said Khatia Tsilosani.

The issues discussed by participants included farmers knowledge to further increase  and limited number of storage facilities  with an inadequate capacity.

The representatives of relevant ministries, donor and partner organizations, farmers and other stakeholders attended the meeting.
