Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili made an opening speech at the 6-th Plenary Meeting of the National Forestry Program of Georgia
Levan Davitashvili outlined the importance of the new Forest Code as a policy document focusing on the sustainable forest management.
Levan Davitashvili noted, that forest inventory and forest information system gains special importance in terms of the development of the sector. The Minister expressed his gratitude to donor organizations for their active support and underlined the importance of the German Government's contribution to the development of the sector.
“40% of the territory of Georgia is covered by forest. Our main responsibility and duty is to take special care of our forests. We have taken a number of important steps with the support of our partners and international organizations. Under the frame of the state policy, effective cooperation with our partners will be continued in the future as well ” Levan Davitashvili said.
At the meeting, the agencies responsible for forestry management and supervision - the National Forestry Agency of Georgia, the Agency of Protected Areas, Department of Environmental Supervision, Adjara AR Forestry Agency - presented the results and future plans for 2019.
It should be noted, that national forestry program has been implementing in Georgia since 2013 by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Department of Forestry and Biodiversity, through financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) aiming to promote the forestry sector reforms in Georgia and increase stakeholders engagement in the decision-making process.
The Deputies of the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Yuri Nozadze and Solomon Pavliashvili, representatives of relevant Agencies, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, German International Cooperation Society (GIZ), diplomatic corps and other stakeholders attended the meeting.
