Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Khatia Tsilosani attended the meeting on "Improving Georgian Food Safety Legislation and Regulations" initiated by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)

The Deputy Minister expressed gratitude to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for supporting Georgia in the field of agriculture, improving phytosanitary and veterinary control and laboratory research methods in the country.

“ Identification of potential hazards, as well as development of risk assessment and improvement of the laboratory research methods is of utmost importance to ensure food safety and increase competitiveness of the agricultural sector in the country. In this regard, sharing experience of the US Department of Agriculture is very important for Georgia. Moreover, the USDA enables us to enhance the capacity of the laboratory in the fields of food safety, veterinary and plant protection ” said Khatia Tsilosani.

The importance of the scientific methods based on the SPS standards to be introduced by the National Food Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture in the country was outlined by the participants, who also brought forward issues related to the importance of risk management to better regulate the food safety system and Good Regulatory Practice(GRP) to support the development and implementation of the SPS standards in Georgia.   

Since 2005, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has conducted a number of technical assistance programs to assist Georgia in fulfilling WTO commitments .

The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and supported by the Rural and Agricultural Policy and Development Institute (RAPDI).
