Government of Georgia made amendments to the regulation on forest use

Government of Georgia made amendments to the regulation on the use of forest resources, according to which, Adjara Forestry Agency has been officially permitted by the forest fund to carry out special cutting, as well as rational utilization of forest resources, it should be noted, that above mentioned activities were carried out by the LEPL National Forestry Agency. Forest fund management bodies are authorized to extract and sell timber waste.

It is noteworthy, that a risk of danger from accumulation and exposure of forest residues, both in terms of fires and in terms of pests always exist; Consequently, the forest fund management body has an opportunity to remove the waste from the forest itself, stockpile and sell it, thus improving the sanitation status of the forest and increasing the Agency's revenue. The private sector is allowed to expand or create alternative fuels (briquettes, pallets, etc.).

The amendment will regulate the sustainable harvest, as well as production of timber resources. For years, it has been a problem to supply and provide population with the necessary timber resources for agricultural purposes, while there are fast-growing species of plantations in the forest fund areas which are targeted at obtaining similar types of timber resources.

The amendment will also regulate forest fund management related issues, including recreational, sports, cultural and arts related activities, with the overall purpose to promote ecotourism and develop tourism infrastructure.

The rules for the use of compensation funds will be determined by the Forest Fund Management Authority and specified under the amendments made to the resolution.
Forest fund management authorities will have an opportunity to receive compensation, which is one of the sources of funding to manage forest maintenance, restoration, forest inventory and fire protection.
