Georgia's Second Biennial Update Report to UNFCCC.

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Nino Tandilashvili opened the event with a welcoming speech.

The Deputy Minister expressed her gratitude to the representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for their active support and cooperation and outlined the importance of the document.

 ‘’Preparing a report on the UN Convention is important for the implementation of the national climate change policy. We are working hard to ensure that all requirements set forth in the Paris Agreement and other international obligations taken by Georgia, including Association Agreement are fulfilled in a timely and thorough manner. As we are all aware, climate change is a proven fact, accordingly, each countries to take a more responsible attitude towards reduction of  greenhouse gas emissions is a matter of great importance "Nino Tandilashvili said.

UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia, Anna Chernyshova addressed the participants of the event.

“2019 is crucial in the context of the implementation of Paris Agreement, as countries around the world must renew their national obligations taken under the Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Georgia is ready to set ambitious plans in this direction and take further steps towards the development of the green economy, which will be assisted by the United Nations Development Program ”said Anna Chernishova.

During the presentation on Georgia's Second Biennial Update Report to the United Nations Framwork Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) , the participants presented quantitative and qualitative analysis of GHG emissions and removals in 2014-2015 by sources and industries operating in the country, implemented, ongoing and planned climate change mitigation measures and gaps and needs for their implementation, recommendations, establishment of the National Measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system in Georgia.

The report also included Georgia's challenges in the fields of climate change mitigation and adaptation. The focus was set on improving legislative regulations, the need for funding, the establishment of institutional mechanisms, moreover, issues related to conduct a more qualitative research and introduce climate-friendly technologies in the country have been outlined at the meeting.
