Levan Davitashvili hosted the representatives of the Diary sector

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili held a meeting with the local dairy producers and processors to discuss the challenges facing the dairy sector and the ways to deal with them.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture expressed readiness and support for Diary sector and noted, that the Ministry will act as a mediator between the primary dairy producers and processors and will address the existing challenges in a timely and effective manner.

“The Ministry takes active steps to overcome the challenges facing the dairy sector. We are ready to cooperate with the primary dairy producers, as well as with the representatives of the processing sector, furthermore, we will consider all important recommendations of the diary producers and processors in the agricultural policy development process ” Levan Davitashvili said.

The representatives of the dairy sector were introduced with the draft resolution on the production and/or primary production of food/feed in an unorganized manner .approved by Georgian government, according to which, from first January, 2020, the activities of unregistered individuals engaged in food production, processing and sale will be subject to state control.

State control will not be applied to the individuals engaged in domestic production , producing small amount of food production, processing or sale.

The participants noted, that these changes would significantly contribute to ensuring food safety and traceability, protecting consumer interests and health, as well as diary sector development and creation of a healthy and competitive environment for honest business operators.

The representatives of the relevant departments of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, officials of the National Food Agency, primary dairy producers, representatives of the processing sector and sectoral associations attended the meeting.
