Establishment of biosphere reserves is planned in Kakheti region


The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Yuri Nozadze attended the event, whereby the support to the establishment of biosphere reserves across the country was expressed by participants .

"The project "Establishment of Biosphere Reserve as a Model of Inclusive and Sustainable Growth at the Local Level in Kakheti Region" envisages to support the nomination of Kakheti Biosphere Reserves in Eastern Georgia. With the active engagement of local partner organizations and other stakeholders, a comprehensive nomination document will be developed and submitted to the UNESCO Secretariat.

The purpose of the Biosphere Reserve is to make environmental activities subject to the rules of the green economy to promote the harmonious coexistence of human and nature.

Within the project, the biosphere reserves are planned to establish in Tusheti and Vashlovani.

The UNESCO Biosphere reserves are a promising tool for the implementation of a common practice of conservation and sustainable land use, defining coexistence of ecological, social and economic interests.

The project "Establishment of Biosphere Reserve as a Model of Inclusive and Sustainable Growth at the Local Level in Kakheti Region" is implemented by the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (RECC), with the active involvement of Akhmeta, Telavi and Dedoplistskaro municipalities. The project is supported by the European Union and German Government and coordinated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
