Food and Food Additives Safety related issues discussed at the international conference

The scientific conference was held in Tbilisi to discuss Food and Food Additives Safety related issues, bringing together representatives of the scientific circles of Georgia, European countries and Turkey.

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Khatia Tsilosani attended the conference. The Deputy Minister expressed gratitude to the organizer of the conference- the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for their active cooperation and support in the implementation of high standards of food safety in Georgia.

"Georgia takes active steps in fulfilling obligations taken under the Association Agreement with the European Union. Therefore, meetings with the representatives of the international scientific circles, as well as exchanging experience between different countries will significantly contribute in establishing an effective food safety and risk assessment system in Georgia and bring our legislation into line with the EU law ”said Khatia Tsilosani.

It was noted, that the process of legislative approximation is underway in Georgia in accordance with the EU directives. At the same time, the laboratory capacity is annually increasing through support of the international donor organizations. During the event, a representative of the National Food Agency briefed participants on the state control system.

Turkish and Dutch scientists outlined the importance of nutrition risk assessment and the importance of proper communication with the public sector,  moreover international keynote speakers shared their experience and discussed achievements and challenges in the field of food and food additives safety.

The Director of the Office of Economic Growth of USAID, Marika Olson, Head of the National Food Agency, Zurab Chekurashvili, Head of the Laboratory of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Irakli Guledani,  field specialists, producers, donor organizations, representatives of consulting firms and laboratories attended the meeting.
