The workshop conducted to discuss ecological condition in town Rustavi

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili, State Representative in Kvemo Kartli Shota Rekhviashvili, Mayor of Rustavi and representatives of the City Council met with the representatives of the civil sector.

At the meeting, the sides reviewed results of the large-scale environmental monitoring conducted in Rustavi and brought forward sanctions imposed on the enterprises operating in the town. The participants were focused on planned legislative changes and regulations aiming at tightening environmental control and sanctions.

 “For the last 20 years, similar monitoring of the industrial enterprises hasn’t been conducted in Rustavi. For the first time this year, the Ministry conducted a large-scale inspection to obtain complete information on the situation and problems facing the enterprises.

In the future, mandatory requirements will be imposed on enterprises to deal with the existing problems. This will enable us to gradually improve existing ecological condition in the town.

In parallel, we are working on legislative initiatives, including increased penalties for those who do not comply with the environmental permits, operate without filters, etc. The sanctions will be quite large, which will give us some results and make the companies more responsive to the environmental issues ”said the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili,.

According to Kvemo Kartli State Representative, Shota Rekhviashvili specific steps were defined under the frame of the meeting, hopefully, ecological condition will be significantly improved in Rustavi, in the nearest future.

The participants decided to create a working group comprising of members of executive, legislative and local authorities, international experts and representatives of civil society. This group will promote coordinated activities and active communication between members.
