Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia got acquainted with the ongoing rehabilitation works of Kvemo Samgori irrigation system in Kakheti region
“Irrigation system plays a crucial role in the agricultural development, therefore, agricultural development is unimaginable without irrigation of lands. Since 2012, significant funds have been spent from the state budget for rehabilitation of the irrigation infrastructure, as a result of which, 130,000 hectares of land were irrigated. This indicates that, a new life has returned to the agricultural land. Irrigation activities are underway in winter to be more prepared for the seasonal needs. Works will be continued in 2020 as well. We have ambitious plans regarding rehabilitation of Kvemo Samgori irrigation system. Rehabilitation works for irrigation infrastructure were financed within the World Bank project. It should be noted, that irrigation water supply in two channels of upper Alazani provide water for the residents of entire Kakheti region, which is crucial for agricultural development. New gardens of high value nut crops are being planted in Kakheti region. Consequently, water supply becomes even more urgent. Considering climate change impact, the challenges have been increasing and the Ministry is working to consistently implement climate-adapted policies” Levan Davitashvili said.
Georgian Amelioration Ltd carries out rehabilitation works on the right and left main canals in Sagarejo municipality. The project envisages rehabilitation of the hydro-technical structures (gallery, culverts and their mechanical equipment, pipelines) on the 4.4 km section of the main channel. The works started in September 2019 and will be completed in July 2020. The total cost of the project made up GEL 1 397 000.
Due to the arrangement of irrigation infrastructure in Sagarejo municipality, irrigation water supply will be provided on 3,330 hectares of agricultural land.
The population of the villages of Ninotsminda, Giorgitsminda, Tskarostavi, Iormughanlo, Duzagrama, Lambalo, Kandaura (part) will get benefits from the irrigation system.
