The group working on protection of Georgian endemic species of wheat crop aiming to ensure all relevant documents for safeguarding Georgian endemic wheat species at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conducted the first workshop at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia hosted the first workshop of the group working on protection of Georgian endemic species of wheat crop. The aim of the meeting was to ensure all relevant documents for safeguarding Georgian endemic wheat species at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Deputies of the Minister Khatia Tsilosani and Yuri Nozadze attended the workshop.

The participants noted,  that historically, Georgia as a country producing and domesticating the soft wheat varieties is regarded as one of the key hubs in the Middle East, therefore, conservation, restoration, as well as raising awareness of Georgian endemic wheat varieties is of utmost importance.

It is noteworthy, that in 2019, Georgian wheat crop was put in the UNESCO Safeguarding – Intangible Heritage List.

The representatives of Georgian government, non-governmental and private sectors together with the heads of the relevant agencies and departments of the Ministry attended the meeting.
