Giorgi Khanishvili attended the meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Project for Sustainable Land Management

The meeting of the Supervisory Board of the project " Applying Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) for mitigating land degradation and contributing to poverty reduction in rural areas " was held at the Environmental Information and Education center.

The First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Giorgi Khanishvili  led the meeting.

“As part of the pilot project, it is important to identify the needs in different regions of Georgia, that will further contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture and environmental protection. At the same time, we need to raise awareness among farmers on the importance of restoring wind breaks, combat desertification and land degradation. It should be noted, that successful implementation of the project requires active engagement of all farmers "- noted Giorgi Khanishvili.

At the meeting, the participants discussed activities carried out within the frame of the pilot project in Dedoplistskaro, Akhmeta and Gardabani municipalities, setting the main focus on the current situation regarding pasture management, key challenges and recommendations that will contribute to the development of a sustainable pasture management program.

The Director of the Regional Environmental Centre of the Caucasus (RECC)  Sopho Akhobadze outlined the international importance of the pilot project and thanked German International Cooperation Society (GIZ) for providing financial support under the project for particular measures related to the legislative component.

The project "" Applying Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) for mitigating land degradation and contributing to poverty reduction in rural areas " is implemented by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF), UN Environment Program (UNEP) and Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (REC).

The project aims  to support integration of good Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) principles and practices into national policy and institutional framework to ensure adoption of economically viable practices by rural communities.
