Giorgi Khanishvili: ‘’ The crop yield, quality and export of agricultural products are increased in the country due to the implementation of proper phyto sanitary policy ”
Steering Committee supporting the development of the plant protection conducted the third meeting at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture
The First Deputy Minister Giorgi Khanishvili is the Head of the Steering Committee which is comprised of 19 members from different departments
At the meeting, the members of the Steering committee set focus on national phytosanitary strategy, highlighted current activities and future plans. Giorgi Khanishvili expressed his gratitude to the donor organizations for their support.
“One of the goals of our strategy is to identify and prevent phytosanitary risks. An important part of the strategy is the fulfillment of the obligations taken under the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area Agreement with the EU, which includes phytosanitary field as well. The Ministry, together with the National Food Agency takes active steps to achieve tangible results. 2019 was a turning point in the fight against the Asian Stink Bug. As a result of proper phytosanitary policy, the crop yield, quality and consequently the export of agricultural products have been increased in the country ”said Giorgi Khanishvili.
The Deputy Head of the National Food Agency, Zurab Lipartia briefed participants on the Agency's activities and highlighted future plans for plant protection.
The lack of qualified personnel as well as the need to attract them in the plant protection field was one of the crucial issues discussed at the meeting.
“The phytosanitary situation in Georgia is improving day by day; Our university is ready to cooperate with our Georgian colleagues and share knowledge and experience accumulated over the years, which will be tailored to the needs and environment of Georgia ”said the Doctor of the State University of California, Bill Erysian.
The representatives of donor organizations, Laboratory of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Scientific Research Center, Ministry of Finance Revenue Service, Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport attended the meeting.
