The Prospect of Establishing the Biosphere Region in Georgia

The project –"Biosphere Reserves as model regions for climate change mitigation and adaptation – capacity development for the establishment of a biosphere reserve in Georgia" was discussed at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.
The project is being implemented in Georgia since 2015 and aims at strengthening the capacity to create a biosphere area at the national and local levels. The preparatory phase is in the final phase, which envisages finalizing decisions in the field of biosphere and management. The results of the project as well as the scenario of its further implementation, including adoption, zoning, management, financing and other important issues necessary for the establishment and management of the Kakheti Biosphere Reserve was also discussed by participants.
The representatives of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Akhmeta Municipality, Telavi and Dedoplistskaro local self-government, German International Cooperation Society (GIZ), Regional Environmental Center for Caucasus (RECC) and Biodiversity Conservation and Research Centre – NACRES attended the meeting.
