Public discussion on Forest Code

Public discussion on Forest Code was held in the "Rooms Hotel Tbilisi". The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili introduced the representatives of international and non-governmental organizations with the draft law on the "Forest Code". The Ministry launched a new "Forest Code" draft law in 2014.
The draft law was elaborated under the frame of the EU-funded project " European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument East Countries Forest Law Enforcement and Governance” ( ENPI FLEG II) and was implemented by the World Bank.
The meeting was attended by the representatives of international and non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders. After reviewing the main directions of the draft law, the participants remarks and opinions will be taken into account in the final document of the " Forest Code".
Due to the National Forest Concept for Georgia the draft law is based on the principles of sustainable forest management. It should be noted, that environmental, social and economic principles should be taken into consideration in the forest management. Moreover, the new definition and categorization of forest are set with entirely new rules. Forests differ according to their categories (types) and ecological functions. The draft law introduces new forms of forest ownership in Georgia.
The representatives of the executive and legislative bodies as well as diplomatic corps attended the meeting.
