Levan Davitashvili: " Population will not face disruption in the food supply"

At the meeting with the representatives of trading networks, under the regulations for preventing spread of COVID-19 in the country, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Levan Davitashvili brought forward food supply related issues.

 

 “In the current situation, cooperation, as well as coordinated activities between the public and private sector is of utmost importance. Our main goal is to ensure, that food supply is not disrupted in the country and the prices of 9 basic foodstuffs are not increased ”said Levan Davitashvili.

 

The Minister provided the representatives of the trading network with the price setting mechanism which refers to the 9 basic foodstuffs (rice, pasta, sunflower oil, flour, sugar, wheat, milk powder, buckwheat and beans). The prices of the above mentioned products will be insured by the government.

As Levan Davitashvili noted, the Ministry has developed a "State Program for maintaining prices for foodstuffs", which will be implemented by the

 

Agricultural and Rural Development Agency together with the Revenue Service.

 

 According to the project, from March 15 to May 15, under certain circumstances, the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency will subsidize the difference in exchange rate for importer companies which buy nine basic food products.

 

It is noteworthy, that, the Interagency Coordination Council is established and led by the Prime Minister of Georgia to prevent the possible spread of the new coronavirus, under which, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture takes responsibility for overseeing the management, logistics and transportation of food supplies. 

 

Ultimately, the working group was set at the Ministry to ensure proper functioning of all above-mentioned areas.

 

The Ministry is taking active strides to ensure, that the entire supply chain operates as smoothly as possible.

 

The Head of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance, Levan Kakava,  and Director of Georgian Distributors' Business Association Iva Chkonia  attended the meeting.
