Levan Davitashvili: "Continuous supply of foodstuffs and other essentials, as well as, availability of food supplies for population are one of the most important directions in the current situation’’

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili highlighted challenges faced in the fight against the new coronavirus. According to the Minister, the Coordination Council is established and led by the Prime Minister of Georgia to ensure, that the whole process of combating the new coronavirus is properly directed, organized, managed, and coordinated.

"Continuous supply of foodstuffs and other essentials, as well as, availability of food supplies for population are regarded as one of the most important directions in the current situation.

There were delays in the delivery of foodstuffs in a number of countries, which was mostly caused by panic buying. These processes were properly managed in our country, therefore, we had no delays in the delivery of foodstuffs, but there were some inconveniences - queues, panic demands, that threatened the increasing speculation in the commodity markets, risks of a price increase.

At present, we have more stable situation, we no longer face queues, the trading networks run smoothly and the products are timely delivered into the markets. It is very important to consider all statements made by the government agencies, this will enable us to take more coordinated actions.

As for supplies, the Ministry is implementing continuous monitoring on wheat and all other essential products, including oil, cereal products, dry products, protein products, meat products, etc. We have enough supplies of food products in the country. The process is controlled and we have no delays in the delivery of food products in the market.

It is not an easy process, but this is a very difficult situation for the whole world. Consequently, there might be some delays in the delivery, as some countries face problems.

Therefore, we have increased our attention to the greatest degree; We work on alternative sources of supply, we hold regular meetings with the representatives of business sector and we mobilize our internal resources. Moreover, we will further continue our activities during this difficult period, so that the population will not be hampered and there will be no additional concern in this crisis  situation ” Levan Davitashvili said.
