Spring agricultural activities are underway in the regions in line with the fight against the spread of the new Coronavirus

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Khatia Tsilosani together with the state representative of Guria region, Zurab Nassaraya, the Deputy Governor, Akaki Shengelia and local authorities got acquainted with the ongoing activities taken in the blueberry and hazelnut gardens.

Last year, the LLC Blueberry Farm was founded in the village Likhauri, Ozurgeti municipality. The LLC Blueberry Farm undertakes planting of blueberry plantations on 50-hactares. As of today, 67 200 berry seedlings imported from Poland are being planted on 21 hectares of land area.

The company's field manager, Nikoloz Kurtanidze noted, that expansion of plantations, as well as construction of a storage-processing plant is further planned to be implemented in the region. The company has 12 permanent employees and hires 150 people for seasonal jobs.

32  farmers are members of the cooperative "Agrolikhauri". The total hazelnut plantation covers 43 hectares of land areas. At this stage, chemical treatment activities are underway. The cooperative participated in the projects "ENPARD" and "Elkana".

“Farmers are actively engaged in land cultivation, intensive farming activities. The representatives of the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture provide farmers with the consultations on agriculture sector related issues and give them recommendations how to meet the requirements and safety standards designed to combat the spread of the new coronavirus in the country.

The farmers undertake intensive planting of blueberry and hazelnut gardens in Guria region. LLC Blueberry Pharma is the beneficiary of the state-funded project ‘’ Plant the Future’’, whereby, state financial support amounted to GEL 250,000.

I would point out, that Georgian hazelnut is one of the most important export products in the country; Hazelnut plantations are being actively cultivated at this stage.

The income derived from the sale of the hazelnut is essential to improve economic conditions of the population” said the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Khatia Tsilosani.

The State Representative of Guria region, Zurab Nasaria noted, that intensive spring farming activities will be further continued in all three municipalities of the region . 

"It should be noted, that field works are in full compliance with the recommendations given from experts for combating the spread of the new coronavirus in the country. Spring farming activities shouldn’t be hampered in order to receive the harvest in the region ” Zurab Nassaraia said.
