Levan Davitashvili: "All relevant state agencies are taking actions to ensure continuous flow of food supply and other essentials to the population

At the end of the meeting of the Inter-Agency Coordination Council, which is headed by the Prime Minister of Georgia, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili highlighted issues related to the current conditions in the food supply and availability in the country.

“We are conducting regular and systematic monitoring of food supplies and observing a new procurement process flowchart. The relevant group works in this area at the Ministry. Although, restrictions imposed on the export of products in some regions is an obstacle, however, at present, our population has no problem in the delivery of goods and has an access to all types of food products. It is very important to envision an uninterrupted flow of goods and commodities from a geographical perspective. The biggest challenge is related to the supply of food in the locked-down quarantine zones. All relevant state structures along with the regional headquarters are taking measures to ensure continuous flow of food supply and other essentials to the population.

It should be mentioned, that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) included disruptions in the global food supply chain in its report, stating, that all the above mentioned  should be taken into account in terms of food security.

Georgia has an adequate policy to ensure the management of food supply chain as well as uninterrupted food supply chains in an emergency or crisis situation. This is one side of the issue. As for the development of the sectors of the economy. Today, the Prime Minister has made a clear statement, that Georgia, like other countries will have a thorough response to the economic challenges facing the country. The bank will allocate about $ 2 billion loan for different sectors of the economy, including agriculture, food industry.

We will have detailed programs, embracing different sectors. We will discuss these programs along with the experts in the next few days. At the post-crisis recovery phase, we should be ready to speed up and promote the growth of some sectors of the economy, including agriculture and food processing industry ” Levan Davitashvili said.
