Levan Davitashvili: "Agricultural markets can operate, if they meet the required standards developed by the National Food Agency and conformed by the Ministry of Health"

The Interagency Coordination Council led by the Prime Minister of Georgia made a decision regarding agricultural markets.

We have seen, that epidemic situation is changing daily in the country. Considering risks and recommendations given by doctors, we need to make faster decisions. Agrarian markets might contribute to a high risk of spreading the disease throughout the country.

In accordance with the decision made by the government, the restrictions will be imposed on certain agricultural markets, although, some of them will further continue to work.

The special working groups and headquarters were set in different regions of Georgia in coordination with the regional governors, which will make decisions to suspend the operation of a number of agricultural markets, as soon as they hold a visit and see food safety violations there.

Agrarian markets will continue to work, if they meet the required standard developed by the National Food Agency and conformed by the Ministry of Health.  The decision also included to temporarily suspend the operation of agricultural markets in Tbilisi and carry out disinfection activities.

If agrarian markets follow the recommendations and adhere to the standards developed by the National Food Agency, they will further continue to operate under the format of the wholesale platform and will follow the rules, that are necessary to meet the standard.

According to the standard, a number of requirements will be reported to the administration of the agricultural markets, namely, if employees of these markets have communicable diseases, they will not be allowed to their workplaces, furthermore, restrictions will be imposed on 70 + years old traders as well, as they are at health risks. One of the top priorities for us is to protect the health of the population in the country ” said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili.
