"There are no preconditions or grounds for increasing the price of bread" stated Levan Davitashvili

" We believe, that stable prices of bread is of utmost importance in the economic hardship and social climate caused by restrictions in response to the growing pandemic COVID-19 in the country. We have very active communication with the Bread Manufacturers' Union of Georgia, as well as other individual enterprises. Moreover, we think, that it is impossible to maintain a fixed price only through administrative decisions, thereby, we have developed and offered an effective price mechanism, which is a state program comprising two main components:

1. Under the threat of the shortages of food products, the demand for wheat -being one of the most important category of food products in global food security has been increased, therefore, we have created more stocks of wheat in the country, using insurance mechanism and offering it to importer companies. 2. Subsidizing; we have taken responsibility on the amount of the subsidy to ensure supply of flour at fixed rates, as far as the flour is the main ingredient in the production of bread we have fixed the price of flour.

Moreover, we put an upper limit - the price of a bag of flour does not exceed 51 GEL. This is an important precondition to ensure, that bread will not become more expensive. However,  we should mention energy companies as well. Major gas supplier companies decided to reduce gas tariff by 10 tetri for bread bakeries. Subsequently, there are neither preconditions nor grounds for increasing the price of bread in the country .

I would like to express my gratitude to the Minister of Economy, Bread Manufacturers' Union of Georgia and all entrepreneurs, who have shown a high sense of responsibility  ”said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili.
