Levan Davitashvili: "Development of grain production is a long term, multi-year process, we will take consistent steps in the next few stages "

"In response to the speculative statements expressed by certain opposition forces, while speaking about achieving specific results in the production of cereals and wheat, we must remember that it is a long-term process. Our politics is consistent in this area and we have created important legislative basis in this direction.

Considering European experience, we have introduced a seed certification system for wheat and grain crops. In 2013, we started testing of grain varieties in the country, which had not been applied for many decades. Testing, zoning (dividing lands into zones) also creating a corresponding document ‘’catalog’’, which comprises certain grain crops is an important prerequisite, it helps us to increase awareness which seed material we need to plant in Georgia.

This is a determining factor to increase the production and productivity of wheat and other grain crops. In 2019 the process of observing, studying, creating a document ‘’catalog’’ was completed.

Next stages include additional financial instruments along with the existing ones to produce more grain crops in the country. Our farmers will be able to increase their production and earn more income. Furthermore, when farmers have relevant knowledge and get a certain professional  expertise, they will plant high-quality seeds, high-yielding varieties, and consequently will get more products per hectare.

This is a precondition for  increasing agricultural production in Georgia. Of course, this does not mean that we will achieve 100% self-sufficiency, but will further increase food, as well as livestock production"- said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili.
