Nation Forestry Reform Document to discuss
Under the frame of the twinning project " Strengthening Sustainable Management of Forests in Georgia", the preparation and implementation of the strategy on the development of the forestry sector was discussed at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. The representatives of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania and Hungarian Institute for Forestry Studies have shared the experience of the European Union.
The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of Georgia 2014 – 2020 approved under the Decree of the Government of Georgia. No. 343. Tbilisi, 8 May 2014, which is a principle instrument for implementing the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity at the National level, obliges the country to develop a strategy and an action plan for forest sector.
The Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union entered into the force in 2016, under which Georgia is responsible for creating a sustainable management system of forests.
This process requires effective scheduling of specific actions, monitoring as well as reporting of results in a fixed time frame. For this purpose, German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) supports Georgian side to develop Strategy and Action Plan for the forestry sector and for the consistent implementation of this process. The participants discussed "Forest Sector Reform Strategy" document at the meeting.
The representatives of the European Union, World Bank, governmental and non-governmental organizations attended the meeting. Â
