National Forest Inventory will be launched in four regions of Georgia in the second half of May

The three tender winner companies will start carrying out field works for registration of forests in four regions of Georgia: Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kakheti in the second half of May. The collection of data on the forestry resources (types and characteristics of forests) will include 1078 clusters (one cluster is defined as a strip, that encompasses three test points). 48 people will be employed, including 24 forest specialists and 24 students. The Department of Biodiversity and Forestry will ensure coordination activities, while implementing the National Forest Inventory. At the same time, activities are being underway to establish a forest information and monitoring system in the country.

In 2018, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia with the support of the German Government (GIZ) started the implementation of the National Forest Inventory in Georgia.

The goals of the National Forest Inventory include:

  • Identification of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of forests throughout the country;

  •  Establishment of a network for continuous monitoring of forest characteristics;

  • Providing support for research and strengthen research institutions;

  • Reporting at national, regional and international levels;

  • Ensuring reliable information for political and strategic decision makers.

A total of 2020 clusters have been identified and distributed according to the regions across Georgia.

In 2019, the field works for National Forest Inventory were carried out in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Guria and Adjara. The collection of data on forest characteristics embraced 441 clusters. 20 people were employed, including 10 forest specialists and 10 students.
