Technical regulation prepared by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture under the extended producer responsibility was adopted at the Government Session

Today, technical regulations for management of electrical and electronic equipment, oils, tires, batteries et.. prepared by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture under the format of the Extended Producer Responsibility have been  discussed and adopted at the Georgian Government session. Each regulation comprising of specific rules and requirements related to the implementation of the EPR was presented by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili. 

 

"The introduction of a modern waste management system is one of the top priorities for our country.  "Waste Management Code" developed  with the support and cooperation of the EU has been enforced since 2015. The Code brings an introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility, according to which the manufacturers and importers are responsible  for post-consumer disposal of the products they produce. "- said Levan Davitashvili.

 

One of the main goals of EPR is to mobilize financial resources to ensure reuse and recycling of waste. The EPR based on the "polluter pays" principle attracts private investment in the infrastructure sector, creats jobs in the country and reduces negative impact on human health and the environment. EPR promotes the development of green and circular economies in the country.

 

Technical regulations have been developed with the support of the European Union, USID, SIDA, UNDP, with the engagement of international and local experts; Sweden, Germany, Austria, Greece, Bulgaria and other countries share their experience to Georgia .

 

 All stakeholders were actively engaged in the process, including companies which are committed to apply the principle of EPR .

 

The draft regulations on "Packaging Waste" and " Removal of toxic and hazardous substances from vehicles’’ have already been developed and agreed with stakeholders.
