"Our environment needs urgent care and protection, it’s the wealth of our country’’ stated Levan Davitashvili

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili together with the Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, Nino Tsilosani held a meeting with the representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations and non-governmental sector.

 

At the meeting,  the Minister set focus on the planned and ongoing legislative reforms in the field of environmental protection and drew his attention to the new Forest Code.

 

"Environmental issues are top priorities for our government. We have adopted a new Forest Code. This is the most important document, which establishes principles of sustainable forest management in the country, as a result,  the forest management will move into a new stage.

 

Moreover, Georgian government has recently approved the standards of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which is also an important document and creates opportunities for the development of the circular economy - green economy. This year, we together with the Parliament of Georgia will continue to work actively on the initiatives and legislative acts, in which the support of our donor organizations is of utmost importance ” Levan Davitashvili said.

 

The Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, Nino Tsilosani pointed out, that, most important laws which have been adopted and implemented in the country were as a result of joint cooperation between the Ministry, Parliament, international  donor organizations and local non-governmental sector.

 

The Forest Code is a mandatory rule in taking care of our forests. The financial support provided from our donor organizations for the implementation of the draft laws is crucial ” Nino Tsilosani said.

 

Levan Davitashvili outlined the changes in the draft law on " Atmospheric Air Protection ‘’and noted, that protection of atmospheric air will be carried out in accordance with the European principles.
The Minister brought forward issues related to the waste management, water resources management, expansion and establishment of protected areas, as well as, numerous other environmental legislative reforms and initiatives, on which the Ministry is actively working.
