Peach season begins in Georgia
This year, the total yield of peach and nectarine is expected to reach 35,000 tons in Kakheti region.
According to the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Solomon Pavliashvili, approximately 15,000 tons of the total harvest will be exported, he also noted, that the headquarter –organization center will be opened in Gurjaani in mid-June to conduct a peach harvest (including delivery and sale of fruit) in an organized and smooth manner.
"Due to the new corona virus pandemic, this year, we have to work under special conditions. The coordination center will follow all recommendations of the Ministry of Health. It is important, that 20 units of refrigeration plants created within the frame of the agricultural support programs will be engaged in the harvest process this year ”Solomon Pavliashvili said.
The group composed of the representatives of the informational-consulting center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, as well as specialists of phyto sanitary areas will be engaged in the process to facilitate the export of peaches . This group will provide measures to prepare/issue necessary export documents under the ‘’Single Window’’ principle.
It should be noted, that the peach and nectarine export amounted to 13,256 tons in 2019.
9 refrigeration plants were engaged in the process to ensure smooth handling of the post-harvest storage of fruit.
In 2019, Peach and Nectarine were exported from Georgia to the following countries:
• Russia - 10,777 tons
• Armenia - 1,373 tons
• Azerbaijan - 667 tons
• Ukraine - 150 tons
• Kazakhstan - 114 tons
• Slovenia - 78 tons
• Iraq - 39 tons
• Iran - 20 tons
• Belarus - 18 tons,
• Moldova - 19 tons
• Qatar - 0.4 tons
It’s worth mentioning, that 11 fruit processing enterprises are co-financed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture in Georgia, out of which three enterprises are operating in Gurjaani and Telavi, Kakheti region.
