Levan Davitashvili got familiar with the ongoing construction activities of the scientific-research space
The construction works are undertaken to build a scientific-research space for viticulture and grape products. The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili got acquainted with the ongoing construction activities, which will be completed at the demonstrative base of perennial crops in Jighaura, the Scientific-Research Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture by the end of the year.
The laboratory, tasting areas, a museum of vine and wine, a cellar, an enoteca and a conference hall will be arranged at the center.
"In 2016, the unique vine collection was created in Georgia, which preserves the Georgian gene pool of Georgian vines handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture through funding of Agro Kartu Bank. Moreover, much has been done to conduct a research in the field of viticulture and winemaking field without hindrance. Our country is in urgent need of a modern institute, which will be equipped with the state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. Therefore, we decided to build a scientific-research space for viticulture and grape products. It should be noted, that despite the restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, construction works have been underway according to the plan and I believe, that it will come to an end by the end of the year ”Levan Davitashvili said.
"One of the main directions is to find Georgian varieties and conserve them in the collection of demonstration and research land plots. Research of these varieties is of utmost importance. The multifaceted space will be built for this purpose, whereby, our scientists will be provided with the opportunities to conduct a research of Georgian vines and wine by using modern methodology "- said the Director of the Scientific Research Center Levan Ujmajuridze.
The demonstration base of perennial crops is located on 80 hectares in the village Jighaura, Mtskheta Municipality. 450 Georgian and 350 foreign vine varieties are preserved in the center, including a collection of unique and rare varieties of Georgian vines, which have been explored and restored over the years .
In 2014, A (A) IP "Agro" and "Agrokartu" Ltd transferred the Jighaura base to the state ownership for free.
