Levan Davitashvili participated in the panel discussion " Climate Change and a Just Transition " held under the frame of the UN Global Compact 20th Anniversary Leaders Summit

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture  took part in the panel discussion  " Climate Change and a Just Transition " held under the frame of the UN Global Compact 20th Anniversary Leaders Summit. Levan Davitashvili informed the participants about the measures implemented and planned by the Government of Georgia to mitigate climate change.


"Climate change is a major, global challenge. Proper policy development is crucial

to achieve effective results, as well as cooperation with the private sector within the country and partnership with other countries across the world. Georgia is taking active strides to reduce greenhouse gases and mitigate climate change ” Levan Davitashvili said.
 
In reference to climate change mitigation, the Minister spoke about ongoing changes in the energy, forestry, agriculture, construction and transportation sectors in the country and drew his attention to the importance of sustainable development of the climate-smart agriculture.
 

As was mentioned, the Covid-19 crisis exposed the necessity to build resilience of countries by accelerating the transition from a ‘’grey’’ to a ‘’green economy’’. The importance of fulfillment of requirements in line with the "Paris Agreement" was outlined at the online meeting.


The participants were focused on the importance of encouraging regional dialogue and cooperation on climate adaptation, energy transition and cross-border environmental programs.
 

The Representatives of the public and private sectors of Central and Eastern European countries took part in the discussion organized by the "Global Compact local network".
