Further meeting was held to discuss beekeeping development and honey bee production related issues

The officials of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, members of the Georgian Beekeepers' Union and representatives of the international organization MercyCorps Caucasus Alliance Program held a further meeting to discuss state policy on the development of beekeeping and promotion of honey bee production in the country.


The Head of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Tengiz Kalandadze gave a detailed account of the state programs developed to promote beekeeping, he brought forward challenges faced by the honey sector and discussed ways to deal with the existing problems.


The participants noted that, development of a full value chain of honey production is crucial
to make Georgian honey products more competitive in the international market, increase export,  expand production, create a database of beekeepers, which will further help to trace the produced products.

The Ministry is actively working in this direction, although the novel coronavirus pandemic has changed the agenda to some extent in the country.

The representatives of the international organization MercyCorps Caucasus Alliance program presented a co-financing scheme for conducting laboratory analysis of honey products and highlighted its economic consequences,.

As was noted, that taking into account the new reality in the country, the representatives of the Ministry will discuss the possibilities of supporting the initiative of the representatives of the Caucasus Alliance Program. The decision will be discussed at the next meeting.

The Director of the Agricultural Laboratory, Irakli Guledani also participated in the online meeting.
