Workshop on Adaptation Measures for Climate Change

The threats posed by the climate change, as well as climate change adaptation measures to be implemented in Georgia  have been discussed at the workshop in Kvareli municipality.

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili, Chairperson of the Committee on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of the Parliament of Georgia Nino Tsilosani, and Resident Representative of the UNDP in Georgia, Louisa Vinton attended the meeting.

The experts invited under the UN Development Program underlined the importance of the disaster risk management, adaptation to climate change and implementation of early warning systems in the country.
The issues related to the international best practices in the field of climate change, as well as necessary measures for introduction of above mentioned mechanisms in Georgia have been discussed by participants.
As was mentioned, the implementation of adaptation measures will significantly reduce the loss and will further contribute to the safety of residents, who live in vulnerable areas and are at high risk from the impacts of climate change and natural hazards.

As noted by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the Government of Georgia is carrying out important measures for adaptation to climate change, including implementation of reforms at the legislative level. Since 2019, the large-scale initiative has been implemented in Georgia, aiming to protect the population from disasters caused by the climate change.

The implementation of seven-year program will help to increase the resilience of the population to adapt to the climate change related threats, reduce the impact of natural disasters on infrastructure and livelihoods and ultimately to better protect 1.7 million people from floods, flash floods, droughts and other extreme weather events and disasters.

The seven-year initiative "Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia" is implemented by the Government of Georgia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), through funding of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Governments of Sweden and Georgia. The program budget exceeds $ 70 million.

The representatives of the Government and Parliament of Georgia attended the workshop, which was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and with the financial support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Swiss and Swedish Governments.
