The first biosphere reserve will be established in Kakheti region

The activities are being underway on a project to create a biosphere reserve in Kakheti, which will be the best tool for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The project is initiated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and implemented by the Government of Germany.

Taking into account the interests of the local population, the representatives of state and international organizations held a coordination meeting in Tusheti region. The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Yuri Nozadze met with the representatives of local authorities and Tusheti communities.
 
At the meeting, the representatives of the communities of Omalo, Dartlo, Shenako and Jvarbosli discussed the prospects of creating a biosphere reserve in the region. The issues related the functioning, management and zoning of biosphere reserves have been brought forward at the meeting.

Further steps were planned in the areas of ecotourism, sustainable agriculture, forest and land use, traditional handicrafts and infrastructure projects considering problems and needs of the population.
 
The biosphere reserve will have a positive impact on the social and economic situation of the local population, new development opportunities will be emerged in the region.
