National forest registration is underway in Kakheti region

Mr. Iuri Nozadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, got acquainted with the fieldwork for the national forest registration efforts in the village of Maghrani together with the German Ambassador to Georgia, HE Hubert Knirsch, Ambassador of the Federal Republic pf Germany to Georgia and representatives of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

 

National Forest Registration in Georgia will enable Georgia to obtain scientifically substantiated and reliable data on forest, which will be later scrutinized for  determining forest policy and shaping corresponding decisions.

 

"The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture aims to establish a forest information and monitoring system. Additionally, the National Forest Registry is a central pillar of the forest information and monitoring system. The project is very important, by the end an upcoming year we will hold completeinformation about the quality of forests, "-  Deputy Minister Nozadze stated.

 

In 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, the National Forest Agency and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). Within the framework of the project, a working group was established, which elaborated a methodology and manual for fieldwork related to the national forest registration,  tailored to the geographical conditions of Georgia.

 

In 2019, the forests of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Adjara and Guria regions were registered, and the report on forest conditions had been drafted as a follow-up to the registration efforts. Fieldwork is currently underway in Samegrelo Zemo-Svaneti, Kakheti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Imereti and Shida Kartli regions.
